They plan, decide, and act — without requiring human intervention at every step.
What Are AI Agents?
The term “AI agent” refers to AI systems that don’t just passively respond to input, but actively take on tasks — independently planning and executing multiple steps. A simple example: instead of just giving a user tips on how to word an email, an AI agent writes, sends, and archives the email directly — based on a short instruction.
Well-known real-world examples illustrate the breadth of these systems: A “vending machine bot” independently negotiates prices and reorders stock from Amazon. An event bot analyzes conference attendee lists in advance and suggests who the user should meet — and who to avoid.
The Breakthrough: From Reactive to Proactive
The key difference from previous AI systems lies in autonomy. AI agents operate less like a tool waiting for commands, and more like a digital employee that makes its own decisions. Experts note that these systems increasingly behave like “biological systems” — adaptive, anticipatory, and self-initiating.
Technically, this is made possible by combining powerful language models with external tools, APIs, and real-time data access. An agent can simultaneously search the internet, create calendar entries, send emails, and query databases — all coordinated toward a single overarching task.
Opportunities: Productivity at a New Level
For businesses and individuals alike, AI agents open up enormous possibilities. Routine tasks that previously took hours can now be completed in minutes. The potential is especially evident in the following areas:

- Software development: Coding agents don’t just write code — they test it, fix bugs, and document changes autonomously.

The Flip Side: Risks and Open Questions
With growing autonomy come growing risks. Computer scientists like Nate Soares warn emphatically that AI agents acting independently could become difficult to control. Who is liable when an agent makes a wrong decision? What happens when a system executes autonomous transactions that don’t align with the user’s intentions?
Even developers like Peter Steinberger, who built the agent “Open Claw,” report being surprised by their own AI at times — a sign that even experts can’t always predict how an agent will react in certain situations.
There are also broader societal questions: Which jobs will become obsolete due to autonomous agents? How can data privacy and security be ensured when AI systems independently access external services?

The year 2026 is already being discussed in the AI industry as a potential turning point. Major tech companies like Google and Meta are investing heavily in agentic systems. At the same time, political pressure is growing: the EU AI Act is entering into force in its key parts, and the German Bundestag is debating national implementation legislation as early as March.
